Already during the Franco-Prussian War, Monet stayed in London in 1870/71, as did Pissarro and Sisley, and received decisive impulses from the English landscape painters for the development of Impressionism. In the fall of 1899 and the two following winters, he returned and attempted to capture the rapidly changing effects of fog from his suite at the Savoy Hotel; often the ever changing effect demanded a switching to another canvas after only a few minutes. Over forty versions of this subject are known.
