Pythagoras, philosopher and mathematician, emigrated from Samos to Kroton around 532 BC and founded a religiously based living community there. Since he believed in the transmigration of souls, he bought the captured fish from the fishermen and released them. Salvator Rosa designed the scene with larger figures for a public exhibition in 1662 (Berlin, Gemäldegalerie).
