According to legend, the 'sinner' Mary Magdalene (cf. Luke, VII, 36 ff.; VIII, 2; John, XI, 1; XII, 1-3) came with her brother Lazarus on their flight to Marseilles and spent the rest of her life in a grotto fasting as a penitent and clothed only by her hair. Daily she was taken up to heaven to partake of the heavenly meal. The painting shows the general topographical situation of the Grotte La Sainte Baume, about 45 km east of Marseille. According to Koch, just like the counterpart with St. Jerome, was created as a repetition of a lost original in the workshop of Patenier and even closer to it.
