Monet composed this theme nineteen times; this is probably the version with the most dramatic mood. His location was a terrace of St. Thomas Hospital, not far from Westminster Bridge. With such paintings, the painter places himself in the tradition of Turner and Claude Lorrain. Monet loved this painting so much that he did not want to give it out of his hand at first. A version of the same mood, much more strongly worked on in the studio, completely 'painted over' and correspondingly gentler, more heavily influenced by the style of the times, reached the Louvre in 1911 (Paris, Musée d'Orsay; Daniel Wildenstein: Monet. Catalog raisonné, 4 vols. (Cologne 1996), vol. IV, no. 1610).

Weiter lässt sich die Annahme anhand dem Auktionskatalog Parke-Bernet Galleries New York (16.03.1960) untermauern, in welchem jeweils nach der Werkbeschreibung des Loses der/die damalige, aktuelle Besitzer/-in in Klammern angegeben wird: in diesem Fall steht bei Los 79 "(Tweed)".

About the provenance
From 1905 to 1960, this painting by Claude Monet was continuously owned by the Tweed family in New York, who were highly respected in banking circles. The banker Charles HarrisonTweed purchased it in 1905 from the French art dealer Durand-Ruel in Paris, who had himself acquired it directly from Monet. On the reverse of the work is an exhibition label from 1945 citing ‘Mr. Harrison Tweed’ as the lender. Since Charles Harrison Tweed had died in 1917, this would be his son, who had the same name. At a 1960 auction in the Parke-Bernet Galleries in New York, the painting, which was still listed as belonging to the Tweeds, was auctioned and thereupon entered the art market. In 1989, the Swiss entrepreneur and collector Walter Haefner purchased the Monet at an auction in New York and initially passed it to the Kunsthaus on loan before finally donating it in 1995. The possibility that it constitutes cultural property confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution can be ruled out.
