Meyer's free realization of Hans Holbein the Younger's 'Laïs of Corinth', painted in 1526, which came to the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel (now the Kunstmuseum Basel) with the Amerbach Cabinet in 1661, enlarges the original, painted in tempera on limewood, to twice the size using an updated technique, whereby some of the enchantingly clear, virtuosically seductive finesse of the Leonardesque-French-influenced original is lost. The Corinthian courtesan Laïs was equally famous for her beguiling beauty and her boundless greed for money.
