The 'Blue Man' is one of the 'Visionary Portraits', of which around a hundred are said to have been painted within a few months in 1917. It depicts the Spanish Count Pedroso, a friend of the political journalist Julio Alvarez del Vayo, who belonged to Hugo Ball's circle. Several of the subsequently created Dada heads are in the Department of Prints and Drawings.
