Pastor Walter Bion (1830-1909), pastor of the Preacher Church and founder of the holiday colonies, was a friend of the Roederstein family. In 1883, he organised the loan of an alleged portrait of Zwingli from Middelburg, which was copied by Roederstein. The fact that Bion's portrait was donated to the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft by Consul Schöller immediately after it was painted suggests that it was painted for this purpose. Thus it could serve as an effective recommendation for further commissions for the painter returning from her training in Paris in 1887. Stylistically, it is influenced by her teacher Carolus Duran.
