Wartmann analyses the genesis of the work on the basis of the 20 or so preliminary studies in the sketchbooks in the Kunsthaus (Kunsthaus Zürich. Jahresbericht. Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft, 1911). During his training in Düsseldorf, Koller was tempted to switch to the historical subject, and even later he was repeatedly tempted to sketch something historical.In: Kunsthaus Zürich.
