During an attack on Sodom, Lot was kidnapped; his brother Abraham chased after the enemies and brought back what had been stolen. Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of El Elyon, comes to meet the victor and brings him bread and wine. Abraham gives him the tithe, but refuses the rest of the booty, which the king of Sodom wants to give him (Genesis, XIV, 17-24). As the preparatory drawing in the Louvre shows, Moeyaert developed the composition from a painting by Pieter Lastman.
