The archangel Raphael supports the young Tobias in catching a fish whose heart, liver and gall bladder will work wonders (Book Tobit, VI, 1-9). In the Middle Ages Raphael became the epitome of the guardian angel. The panel is part of the San Nicola da Tolentino polyptych from the Augustinian Church of Santa Maria della Cella in Sampierdarena (Genoa), created in 1466. The central panel shows the Augustinian Saint Nicholas of Tolentino in glory (La Spezia, Museo Amedeo Lia). Other panels can be found in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan and in various private collections.
