According to the legend, the Joachims sacrifice was rejected in the temple because he, as an already old man, had no children. He retired to his flocks of sheep - these are only recognizable in the preliminary drawing - and prayed for 40 days. When he returned to Jerusalem, he met his wife Anna under the city gate, who was pregnant with Mary, the mother of Jesus.
