Giovanni Segantini1858 Arco – 1899 Schafberg (Pontresina)
We have 9 artworks by Giovanni Segantini online.
We have 2199 paintings online.
Baba (Barbara) Uffer (see inv. 884) and a Savognin boy, son of the family's cook and model of the shepherd of the 'Alpweiden', contemplate 'Ritorno all'ovile' ('Return of the sheep to the stable'; Fischbacher Stiftung St. Gallen/St. Moritz) on the easel; at the back is the first version of 'Aratura' ('Plowing'; Munich, Neue Pinakothek). A programmatic image for Segantini's conception of art, which resolutely turns away from the studios of the Wilhelminian period with their professional models. The lighting design refers to Caravaggio and Rembrandt, the two great models of 'honest' realism. All light falls on the work of art, in which the viewer recognizes himself.
