On Gottfried Keller see Böcklin (inv. 1196). In 1886, his last work was published as the time-critical novel 'Martin Salander'. Stauffer first mentioned the portrait project in a letter from Stauffer to Lydia Escher on 21.X.1885. According to an invitation from Lydia Welti-Escher to Keller on 3.VIII.1886, her portrait was finished by this time: 'Hopefully you will find it as good as it deserves and decide, for the sake of your friends and admirers, to have your portrait painted quite conscientiously.' The picture was commissioned by Welti and was executed in the greenhouse of the Villa Belvoir. On August 16th Stauffer wrote to Max Mosse in Berlin that the portrait was almost finished after three sessions. In 1887 he created the important etching of the seated poet (Max Lehrs: Karl Stauffer-Bern, 1857-1891: ein Verzeichnis seiner Radierungen und Stiche, 1907, no. 31).
