The anchorite Nathanael sits in his walled-up cell, which he never intends to leave again. In vain, the devil tries to dissuade him from his decision by staging an accident: the loaves carried by a collapsed donkey are meant for a monk who wants to distribute them to the poor. A hermit who has an exhaustingly long way to the well plans to move his cell closer. He abandons this plan because an angel meets him with the news that he is counting all his footsteps because God wants to reward him in eternity for his long travels.
