Varlin was commissioned in 1963 by the architect Tita Carloni to paint two large-format paintings for the sub-section 'Living Joyfully and Meaningfully' of the 'L'art de vivre' sector of the 1964 Swiss National Exhibition in Lausanne. After lengthy consideration, Varlin decided on two group paintings: 'Salvation Army' (The Spiritual Joy) and, as a counterpart, 'Gluttony' (The Sinful Joy). Friedrich Dürrenmatt bought 'Salvation Army' after the Expo and it hung in his study from then on. Today, 'Gluttony' belongs to the collection of the Swiss National Museum in Zurich.
