It depicts the Danish sculptor Herman Vilhelm Bissen (Schleswig 1798 – Copenhagen 1868), who worked in Thorwaldsen's circle in Rome from 1823 to 1834. After his return to Denmark, Bissen mainly created monuments.
According to the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek, which holds most of the works from his early period, the portrait was painted in 1833/34.
