The Zurich animal and battle painter Conrad Gessner (1764-1826), eldest son of Salomon Gessner, shared a flat with Jacques Sablet during his stay in Rome (1788/89). Sablet's main merit is the transfer of the large-figure portrait of English coinage into the small format; this picture formula became a European fashion towards 1790. The picture is mentioned in a letter from Conrad Gessner to his mother Judith from Naples dated 18 July 1788 (Zentralbibliothek Zürich, Ms V 519.118, No. 38). It is an early testimony to painting in oils in the open air.
