The painting was created under the influence of the paintings of Seurat and Signac, which hung in the 'Salon des XX' in Brussels in 1887 and 1888, and was first shown in February 1889 in the 'Salon des XX'. It was painted in August 1888, when van de Velde stayed with his brother Laurent in his villa after his mother's death. It is considered the first of his few pointillist paintings. A little later he turned to Art Nouveau, which he influenced significantly as a designer.
