The scene takes place at Torre di Schiave in the Roman Campagna during a thunderstorm, Rome can be seen in the distance. During his training in Rome from 1832 onwards, Zeller was patronized by Horace Vernet, then director of the French Academy; this painting was the first major composition in oil that he undertook and presented to him.
