On May 10, 1899, Vallotton, who had previously been a socio-critical figure, married Gabrielle Rodrigues-Henriques (1863-1932) from the extravagant Parisian art dealer family Bernheim. The present painting shows a room in their first apartment at 6 Rue de Milan, near the Opéra; stylistically it marks the transition between the highly stylized preceding interiors and the realism of the later production, which broke away from the flatness of the Nabis.
