After Warhol had already experimented with the motif of the Coca-Cola bottles in 1960, he achieved his own style in 1962 with the striking reproduction of the canned soups he ate every day. He showed a series of smaller paintings in Los Angeles with all the flavors of the company; the Zurich painting is one of three or four works that monumentalize the motif and dramatize it through the torn label. Warhol had Edward Wallowitch take a photograph of the prepared object in his studio and translated the shot into the picture by means of projection.
