Lucius Junius Brutus, liberator of Rome from the monarchic rule and founder of the republic, with Tarquinius Collatinus first consul, discovers the names of his sons on the list of counter-revolutionaries and mercilessly enforces the new law, before which all are equal, with the death sentence (509 B.C.; Plutarch: Vita of Publius Valerius, chap. 6). Tischbein received the inspiration for this novel theme during his stay in Zurich in 1781/82, where Brutus was revered as an exemplary republican.
