Abendlandschaft mit Schafherde

The painting is mentioned in Eduard Meyer's letters to his friend Zünd (Zentralbibliothek Zürich, Ms. Z II 716, 35) from 23.VII.1888, when he first saw a draft of the composition, to 1891 (delivered between 23.V. and 3.XI.). The letter of 2.XII.1892 shows that he subsequently received the oil sketch for 'Gang nach Emmaus', a large composition (1877; St. Gallen, Kunstmuseum, see Robert Zünd in seiner Zeit (exh. cat. Luzern 1978), no. 127), which is closely related to the present picture. Both must be based on a nature study on Lake Lucerne near Ennethorw with a view towards the Bürgenstock. Source
