Inv. 1455-1458 and 1661-1664 are nine fragments of a panel originally measuring approx. 110 x 230 cm, which was cut into 21 pieces in 1836, which were added to form rectangular panels of 33 x 44 cm each. In 1975, Hera Canetti removed the additions. Ten fragments are in the Christ Church Picture Gallery in Oxford, one each in the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh and in the Jarves Collection of the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven. Episodes from the 'Vitae Patrum' of Palladius and Jerome are depicted; the ideal of the hermit is a prominent theme in Tuscan painting of the Trecento and the Quattrocento: reference is made here only to the monumental Thebais fresco, probably painted by Buonamico Buffalmacco in the Camposanto in Pisa in 1336-1341, a model for several generations of painters.
