Study for the 1905 painting in the Winterthur Art Museum (Gloor, Lukas, Albert Welti, Stäfa: Gut, 1987, colour plate 36).
The preoccupation with the subject goes back to 1886; in 1897, various sketches were created, including 'Johann der muntere Seifensieder' after Jean de La Fontaine's fable adapted by Hagedorn. More important was Gottfried Keller's poem 'Poetentod', from which Welti had four lines added to the frame. With the poet's corpse, the inspiring Penates, the household deities, leave the apartment.
