The composition was conceived in 1818 and the cardboard probably made as early as 1819, but painting was not executed until 1835-1838, commissioned by the mayor Hans Conrad von Muralt. The scene in Kirchgasse with a view of the Grossmünster shows the Zurich reformer Huldrych Zwingli (born 1484 in Wildhaus, Toggenburg) setting out for the Battle of Kappel in 1531, at which he fell. Like his wife Anna Reinhard and his colleagues Mykonius, Leo Jud and Pelikan, he is depicted after the portraits of Hans Aper, and other persons are also based on contemporary portraits: Mayors Röist and Walder, Field Captain Lavater and Pannerherr Schweizer. According to Bullinger's history of the Reformation, Zwingli's horse became stubborn, many saw this as an evil omen and wanted to hold him back, but he said: 'None of God's can be lost, we are his in life as in death.'
