Bozzetto for one of the main frescos in the Salone of Villa Cordellina in Montecchio Maggiore, built by Carlo Cordellina (1704-1794), Giurisconsulto of the city of Vicenza. After the battle of Issos (333 B.C.) the family of the defeated Persian Darius appears before Alexander. Deceived by the rich garment of Hephaistion, Sisygambis, the mother of the great king, addresses the companion instead of the general and world conqueror. The latter, however, looks to the beautiful sister of Darius, whom he will marry, and gives freedom to the family of his enemy (Curtius Rufus, Life of Alexander). The counterpart, with the abstinence of Scipio, shows the other great example of virtue for the mercy of the victor. Tiepolo was inspired by Veronese's major work on the same theme (London, National Gallery). Large-scale retouching in the sky and in the flags.
