Left side trimmed by the length of the dog; abrasion. The depiction of the triumph of Bacchus, the Greek wine god Dionysus, originating from the Orient, as a child on a panther goes back to ancient sarcophagus reliefs, whereby van Dyck was at the same time inspired by Titian's 'Bacchus and Ariadne' (London, National Gallery). The flowers and fruits were painted by Jan Roos, a specialist working in Genoa, and possibly also the putti on the right. Roos also painted at least two repetitions, one now in Raleigh. Reproduction engraving dated 1628 by David Brunn with a dedication by the de Wael brothers, marine painters with whom van Dyck lived in Genoa.
