Johann Caspar Lavater (Zurich 1741-1801), pastor at St. Peter's in Zurich, editor of the 'Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntniss und Menschenliebe' (1775-1778), was a theologian, writer, physiognomist and draughtsman. He was one of the great personalities of the Age of Enlightenment and Sturm und Drang. The strict profile view is just as much a reflection of humanist tradition as of Lavater's method of deducing a person's character from their profile. Walter Hugelshofer: Felix Maria Diogg. Ein Schweizer Bildnismaler 1762-1834 (Zurich/Leipzig [c. 1941], nos. 62, 88, describes two versions of this portrait, one dated 1794; another is in the Haus zum Rechberg (Cantonal Collection, no. 3152). The present one is less modelled; according to Wartmann's assumption, the picture was not worked through more with artistic intent.
