The resistance of the people of Nidwalden, who rejected the centralist Helveticism and as free people did not want to be 'liberated' by the French occupying army, was shattered violently in 1798. Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827) was sent to Stans to care for war orphans. The picture combines the portrait of the exemplary pedagogue with the tradition of Cartias-depictions and, in view of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, emphasizes Switzerland's humanitarian role.
