The prophet Elijah promised King Ahab a drought of one year, and God commanded him: 'Hide by the brook Krith, which flows east of the Jordan. You can drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.' But this brook also dried up (1 Kings XVII, 1-7). Bracht travelled to Palestine in 1880/81 and strove for topographical accuracy in his depictions of biblical stories. A variant of this painting, with the figure of Elijah closer to the ravens, is illustrated in Max Osborn: Eugen Bracht (Bielefeld/Leipzig 1909) p. 36 (text p. 56).
