One of several versions of the lost painting No. 37 of the Milton Gallery, see Gert Schiff: Johann Heinrich Füssli's Milton Gallery (Zurich/Stuttgart 1963). The theme is taken from Milton's shepherd's poem 'Lycidas' on his friend Edward King, who died at an early age, and which occupied Füssli between 1794 and 1796. The motif of the shepherd asleep goes back to the painting 'The Shepherd's Dream', 1793 (London, Tate; Gert Schiff: Johann Heinrich Füssli 1741-1825, 2 vols. (Zurich et al. 1973; Oeuvrekataloge Schweizer Künstler 1), no. 1762), in which the shepherd, dozing off in the midst of a fairy round, is guarded by his dog, which anxiously observes the ethereal events.
