In the figure of Christ carrying the cross, the two old hieratic-symbolic images are combined: the face of the person carrying the cross, the Veil of Veronica on the one hand, and the Man of Sorrows as the epitome of suffering under the cross on the other.
The painting dates from Montagna's late creative period and is comparable to his half-figure 'Man of Sorrows' (Paris, Louvre).
