Cuyp probably saw the jaguars in the menagerie of the governor in The Hague; since 1636 his cousin Johan Maurits of Nassau stayed in Brazil and sent Exotica to Holland. Jacob's son Aelbert used the standing jaguar in several representations of 'Orpheus and the Animals'.
