With the Latin inscription set in 1873 (cf. Courbet's letter to M. Pasteur, 20.II.1873, Akten des Kunsthaus Zürich, inv. 2383), the translation of which reads 'he made it in chains', the painter, who was imprisoned in Sainte-Pélagie after the suppression of the Commune in 1871, identified himself with the miserable fish dying on the fishing rod. The picture was painted in July 1872, after his imprisonment, when Courbet was visiting his friends, the Ordinaire family in Maisières, near Ornans. A laterally inverted version of the Zurich painting, painted in 1873, is kept in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
