'In 'Der Tag' Hodler depicted the awakening and blossoming of man and nature in the early morning light.' (Peter Vignau-Wilberg: Ferdinand Hodler. Der Tag. Vom Realismus zum Symbolismus (Frankfurt 2003)). The first pictorial ideas go back to the time of the creation of 'Nacht' (1890; Kunstmuseum Bern), the first monumental version was created in 1899 (Kunstmuseum Bern); the present second version was painted by Hodler following his great success at the Vienna Secession in 1904 for Carl von Reininghaus until 1907; in the third version, created in 1909/10 (Kunstmuseum Luzern), he erased the second and fourth figures in the course of the working process, thus bringing out the symbolic gestures even more strongly in the three remaining ones.
