Onophrius was one of the most famous anachoretes who began to populate the desert near Thebes in the 4th century (cf. at Amidei, inv. 1455-1458, inv. 1661-1664). On Sundays and feast days, an angel fed the hermit with the host. His body was covered only by his hair.
