Friendship comes in different colours and shapes; for Renoir it often came in the shape of two-figure portraits in the 1890s. In particular, the depiction of two girls at leisure occupied him for a while and becomes a recurring motif. While the face of the brown-haired girl in the pink dress is hidden from us, the other one is looking at the flower in her hand with half-closed eyes. Smiling patiently, she lets her friend weave the flowers into her summer hat. Who the two are does not seem to be known so far, despite their repeated appearance in various paintings and studies. With impressionistic lightness, the colours overlap and partially merge. What unfolds is a moment of friendly intimacy that the two friends share on this summer day.
