The German composer, pianist and conductor Max Reger (Brand in der Oberpfalz 1873 - Leipzig 1916) became famous mainly for his organ works, also important as a composer of chamber music, songs, choral and orchestral music. The painting was commissioned posthumously by the Hamburg merchant and art collector Henry B. Simms. A photograph by the Leipzig photographer Hoenisch from 1915 seems to have served as a model.
