Made for the salon of Dr. Viard in Paris. Delaunay also realized the same composition, which follows on from the painting in Amsterdam (Stedelijk Museum, dated 1912/13) and, for the right half, from the Zurich painting (see inv. 1957/0027), also in a somewhat smaller version, which is now in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (1930, 127 x 192 cm; colour illustration by Bernard Dorival: Robert Delaunay 1885-1941 (Paris 1975), p. 119).
