Buchser's fourth stay in Italy, from May 1878 to May 1879 in Rome, resulted in a preparatory oil sketch (Kunstmuseum Basel, Inv. 1896.66.114) dated June 15, 1878; a first version is said to have been created during his third trip to Italy in 1874 and exhibited in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1876 under the title 'Il Bacio' (The Kiss). The present painting was called 'Under the Olives' in 1879, 'Italian Shepherds, Idyll' in the exhibition in Zurich in 1887 and was inventoried as 'Italian Shepherds' Idyll'.
