Saul, orthodox Jew and persecutor of Christians, on his way to Damascus, struck blind by an apparition of light and thrown from his horse. By God's exclamation 'Saul, why do you persecute me?' he is converted to Christianity as Paul (Acts of the Apostles, IX, 3 ff.). Cuyp treated this theme repeatedly in slightly varied form; the best-known version is in the Picture Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
