Max Haufler began his training as a painter as early as 1925/26 during his holidays with Albert Müller, then with Paul Camenisch in Castel San Pietro, where evidently this self-portrait was painted.
In 1936 he went over to film, directed and became internationally famous as an actor, among others in film adaptations of stories by Jeremias Gotthelf and Friedrich Dürrenmatt.
