In his first ambitious composition, which was created in Florence, Giacometti chose the same theme as Hodler in his famous painting of 1890 (Bern) and presents it in the beautifully lined Art Nouveau style that he had developed from the inspiration in Eugène Grasset's studio in Paris.
In Hartmann's work, an complete draft and a study of the head are shown (Hans Hartmann: Augusto Giacometti. Ein Leben für die Farbe (exhibition cat. Chur 1981)).
