Together with the 'Strassenbild' (Kunstmuseum Bonn) and two other diptychs ('Deutsche Schule', 'Die Familie'), the painting is one of a group of works created for the 1980 Venice Biennale. Only the 'Modell für eine Skulptur', now in the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, was exhibited (see Georg Baselitz (exh. cat. Zurich 1990), no. 37 resp. p. 179, 181). The panel in the painter's hand refers to an action at the 'documenta V' in Kassel in 1972: Thomas Peiter appeared there permanently as Albrecht Dürer; after Beuys shouted out to him: 'Dürer, I will personally guide Baader +/+ Meinhof through the Documenta, then they are resocialized', he wrote on two panels: 'Dürer, I will personally guide Baader +/+ Meinhof through the Documenta V J. Beuys' and carried it around. Beuys later processed these panels into an object (Speck Collection, Cologne).
