The composition of the 'Yellow Girls' goes back to Hodler's 'Spring' (1901; Essen, Museum Folkwang); the main version burned in Munich in 1931. Four further versions stylize the figures more abstractly, until they dissolve into a surface structured only by large yellow dots (Cuno Amiet, von Pont-Aven zur 'Brücke' (exh. cat. Bern 1999), colour ills. p. 200-203). After Hipp (Cologne 2001), the present painting is the last of this group.
