In his Metamorphoses, Ovid tells how Phaëthon asks Apollo for the reins to the solar chariot as proof of his paternity and how he loses control over it and falls (Book I, 750 - II, 400). With this tondo, created in Florence, Giacometti offered a demonstration of his colour theory, which he laid down in the programmatic essay 'Die Farbe und ich' (1933) (cf. Klemm 1991; the text, among others, in Beat Stutzer: Augusto Giacometti. Wege zur Abstraktion (Zurich 2003; = exh. cat. Chur)). Hartmann forms a large compositional study in pencil (Hans Hartmann: Augusto Giacometti. Ein Leben für die Farbe (exh. cat. Chur 1981)), Stutzer a colour study in oil (Beat Stutzer/Lutz Windhöfel: Augusto Giacometti. Leben und Werk (Chur 1991)). The tondo, this favorite form of the Florentine early Renaissance, is framed by the original, simply painted frame.
