About the provenance
This painting came from the collection of chemistry Nobel Prize winner Leopold Ruzicka. It was donated to the Kunsthaus by the Ruzicka Foundation in 2005. Ruzicka acquired the work in October 1939 from Galerie Fischer in Lucerne, to which it had been delivered in 1937 by the German art historian and art dealer Hans Wendland. At the time, Wendland was working in Paris. During the Second World, War, he profited from Nazi art looting. The painting by Frans Hals is documented as coming from the Paris art dealership of Franz Kleinberger, who died in June 1937. To date, it is not known exactly when and under what circumstances the Jewish art dealer sold the painting. In an effort to obtain further information, the Kunsthaus Zürich has listed the work in the Lost Art Database (https://www.lostart.de/de/Fund/630032).
