The rocky arch and the picturesque situation at the exit of the mountain, as well as the diagonal composition, are reminiscent of the mannerist landscapes of the Dutch working in Italy, especially Paul Bril.
Generally well preserved, missing parts (dog, water) added to the lower border.

About the provenance
The purchase of this painting by Claude Lorrain by the Kunsthaus Zürich in 1995 was made possible by an interest-free loan from the Ernst von Siemens Foundation. To fund it, two paintings from the Ruzicka Foundation, which comprises the collection of the Nobel Prize winner and art collector Leopold Ruzicka, were assigned to the Walter and Annemarie Boveri bequest. The landscape was purchased directly from the collection of the Jewish art dealer Adolphe Stein, who resided in Crans-Montana. He had once lived in Paris and fled to Brazil during the Second World War. After returning to Europe, he settled in Switzerland and continued working as an art dealer. He and his wife Peggy had a house in Zurich, but most of his dealings involving paintings and drawings by the Old Masters were conducted in London and Paris. It is still unclear when and how the work entered his collection. The possibility that it constitutes cultural property confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution cannot therefore be ruled out.
