Ferdinand Stadler (Zurich 1813-Zurich 1870) was a busy architect, both for residential and public buildings. He usually cultivated a restrained classicism, but for church buildings he also made use of the Gothic style, in which his best-known building, the Elisabethenkirche in Basel, is decorated. The Zürcher Künstlergesellschaft dedicated the New Year's Gazette 1872 to him (Neujahrsblatt der Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft, 1872).
The bust was created in the year of the architect's death; a version in marble dated 1871 ended up in the Haus zum Kirschengarten of the Historical Museum there as a gift from the Basel Evangelical Reformed Church Council.
